I wish I could find an event that meant as much as simple seeing.

I received an MFA in Photography from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York in 1979. The intensity of the critiques and instruction I received back then, has certainly influenced me to this day. However, I think the beginnings of using a camera to express my "self" really began when handed one in high school at age 17 when asked to be the editor of my small all girl high school yearbook. I was given a voice.

I have really been photographing all my life. I can remember as a young girl, looking through The Family of Man  over and over again. I still possess that well-worn copy and still find inspiration within those pages, as a photographer.  I see and photograph in black and white as this has always been my orientation.

I find a great deal of inspiration as an image maker from writers. William Carlos Williams said that "poets write for a single reason, and that would be to give witness to splendor." A writer can create images in words that can profoundly affect a reader. Similarly, a photographer uses the world directly as well, to make images of significance to the viewer. We both look and see and wonder at the world, and want to share.

As a worker, I photographed families and children, as well as working as a Picture Researcher for many publishing houses. I switched careers entirely when I became an educator, specializing in working with students with dyslexia, all the while, making photographs as a means of self expression.
